A Milestone in the Doing EA Journey

A Milestone in the Doing EA Journey

Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Tom Graves on the next evolution of Doing Enterprise Architecture. I’m delighted to share that this body of work has now passed through proofing and is ready for production.

Tom has already announced the completion across his channels, including a thoughtful public post on Patreon that outlines where this journey takes us from here. It’s worth a read if you’re interested in the deeper story behind the work and the future directions we see opening up.

For me, the release of this book is significant for another reason: it coincides with the strategic pivot of Ecothought. As I’ve shared previously, Ecothought is evolving from its roots in Defence-related infrastructure design toward a much broader focus—on intelligent landscapes, sustainable food systems, and the responsible design of the socio-technical systems that underpin our future.

This book sits right at that intersection. At its heart, it’s about making sense of complex systems and applying enterprise architecture not just to business or technology, but to the whole enterprise of human activity. It’s about discipline, responsibility, and the tools we need to navigate uncertainty with clarity and care.

But publication is not the end point. In fact, it’s the beginning of a new phase. I am now working on the next iteration of Doing Enterprise Architecture—a project that will take the principles in this book and apply them directly to the critical questions of our time.

How do we design systems that are resilient in the face of climate change?
How do we balance sustainability with justice and equity?
How do we create architectures that help us, collectively, shape a more responsible future?

These are not abstract questions. They sit at the centre of debates happening in boardrooms, parliaments, farms, cities, and communities worldwide. My hope is that this next body of work can make a meaningful contribution to those debates, and offer practical frameworks for moving forward.

In many ways, this is the essence of Ecothought’s pivot: applying the rigour of enterprise architecture to the most human of challenges and doing so with an eye firmly fixed on responsibility and stewardship.

The completion of this book with Tom marks one milestone on that path. I’m deeply grateful for his partnership - and excited for what comes next.

Stay tuned—there’s much more to come.
